What types of electric fireplaces are there?

Electric fireplaces come in a few installation styles, and the right one depends on your wall. Built-in models recess into a framed opening. Wall mount units hang on the surface of a finished wall. Inserts slide into an existing wood or gas firebox. Three-sided models show the fire through the front and both ends. For a room without any construction, there are freestanding units and cast iron electric stoves such as the Amantii Lynwood E50 and E70.

How much heat does an electric fireplace give off?

Most models list a heater of about 4,800 to 5,000 BTU, which works as supplemental heat for one room. A few, such as the Amantii RusticStone inserts and LumaForest units, list up to 10,000 BTU. On many models you can run the flames with the heater off, so the fireplace can be used year round.

What should I check before I order?

Start with size. The number in a model name is its nominal size, and the actual width can differ, so read the listed dimensions and the framing or opening size in the manual. Next, check power. Some units have a plug, others are hardwire ready or hardwire only, and larger built-ins may call for a dedicated circuit. Last, look at controls and media. Many models connect over WiFi, and many include a log set or fire glass media in the box.
