Built-in electric fireplaces recess into a framed wall opening so the face finishes flush with the surrounding surface. They need a rough opening and an outlet or hardwire connection, but no chimney, flue or gas supply.

Rough opening

Frame to the manufacturer's stated opening dimensions, not to the fireplace's outside dimensions — the two differ.

Finishing

Most units accept tile, stone or drywall right up to the trim edge. Check the stated clearance to combustibles above the unit before specifying a mantel.
