How to choose an electric fireplace insert

What is an electric fireplace insert?

An electric fireplace insert is a firebox that fits into an existing wood or gas fireplace opening and runs on electricity instead of fuel. It gives an old masonry fireplace a flame display and a heater without a gas line or new venting.

The inserts in this collection come from Amantii, Remii and Sierra Flame. Amantii offers the Classic Edition (CE26, CE30 and CE33), the RusticStone line (RS30, RS36 and RS42) and the TRD Bespoke series, which runs from 30 to 48 inches. Remii's Heritage Classic inserts include 30- and 33-inch models with log and grey brick interiors. Sierra Flame's INS-FM-30 and INS-FM-34 are deep units designed for renovation and retrofit work, as an electric alternative to a wood or gas insert.

How do I measure my fireplace for an insert?

Measure the width, height and depth of the firebox opening, then compare those numbers with the opening size in the model's installation manual. Don't order by the number in the model name. That number is nominal, and the real width can be quite different: the Sierra Flame INS-FM-34 measures 42 inches wide overall because of its steel surround. The dimensions on each listing describe the unit itself, not the opening or framing it needs, so the manual is the document to size from.

Do I need a trim kit with my insert?

A trim kit covers the gap between the insert and the edges of your fireplace opening. Amantii sells three-sided and four-sided trim kits for several TRD sizes, and the RusticStone inserts accept either style. Several Classic Edition and Heritage Classic models come with a fixed trim, so check the listing before you buy a separate kit.

Electric Fireplace Insert Questions

Do electric fireplace inserts plug in or need to be hardwired?

It depends on the model. The Sierra Flame INS-FM inserts have a plug on the left side and are also hardwire ready. Check the listing and manual for the connection and circuit your model needs, and hire a licensed electrician for any hardwired install.

Does an electric insert need a chimney or vent?

No. An electric insert burns no fuel, so it produces no exhaust and needs no venting. It uses the existing fireplace opening only as a space to sit in.

Can I control an electric fireplace insert from my phone?

Many can. The Amantii Classic Edition and Remii Heritage Classic inserts are WiFi enabled, and the TRD Bespoke models add built-in audio.

Can any of these inserts be installed outdoors?

The Amantii TRD Bespoke inserts are rated by the manufacturer for indoor or outdoor installation. Follow the manual for the location, exposure and electrical requirements before installing one outside.
